Broken Silence Page 15

“Natalia!” I heard my dad yell from the back of the house. I got up and went to join them for dinner. I should probably enjoy the night while I could. Who knows when or if I would get to see them again.

I found my parents already sitting at the table, holding hands and whispering. I sighed and sat down with a forced smile on my face.

“Hi Dad, how was work today?” I knew asking about his work would bring the conversation to a safe place. He worked with the village elders to keep record of our people, traders, and buildings.   “No worries dad, go ahead. I want to take a bath and put some final touches on the sketches I started today.” I said in a sweet voice. “I love you guys, I’ll just see you there.”

“Alright, love. See you there.” Mom said as they got up and left. I sat quietly in my room and waited to make sure they were completely on their way. I let out a sigh of relief as I grabbed my note and put it on the table. I gathered my satchel and filled my bottle with water. With one last glance around my home, I grabbed my cloak and left my quiet life behind.
